Self Portraiture | Initial Photographs

Self-Portraiture:
I used self-portraiture as experimentation; I wanted to investigate into using self-portraiture to capture different outcomes. I wanted to create different makeup looks that I could then model myself; I did this for a couple of possible outcomes. The photographs below are part of my development work throughout the experimentation of self-portraiture. Personally I’m not keen on these images because they are photographs of myself but I have taken a lot of skills and ideas from doing this part of development.

Raw Photographs (Not edited)

For this photo shoot I based it on a theme of 'bright eyes' and created a look that represented bright colours and textures. These photographs are self-portraiture and I did a couple of poses and tried out different shapes. I am going to re-shoot this shoot as my hair isn't slicked back and in place and I am also going to find a model who has more defined lines on their face and body.

Again for this shoot I added glitter and bright colours to go with my theme of innovative makeup. I also added in props to make these photographs dramatic and theatrical. I took these images in the studio so I have a crisp white background, so there are no distractions in the background. Also the studio lighting is required for these kinds of images because I want the camera to pick up the makeup and make it clear. As you can see the right eye is blurry as the camera has focused on the bridge and tip of my nose.

I used Photoshop to edit the photographs below. I made the backgrounds whiter and my eyes brighter. I also cropped some of the images so it is just a photograph of my eyes.
This photograph is very distinctive and unique. The composition of this image helps the image to be innovative and effective, the bright eyes contrast against the plain white background. When I reshoot these images I will make sure that my model (or me) is looking away from the camera as I think this will create more feeling and energy to the photograph.
I really like the composition of this photograph because it creates different lines and shapes with the hands and hairline. By having a really strong (bright) makeup look really contrasts to the bright white background and makes it more enhanced and distinctive. This photograph shows a little bit of drama as it also portrays creativity and investigation into different poses and bright eyes.
This photograph on the other hand is a lot closer and the camera is focused more on the eyes. This has a more effective divide between the bright eyes and the crisp white background. I really like the composition of this photograph, it is central and there is just the right amount of space each side of my head. When I reshoot some of these images I will make sure that all bits of hair is slicked back and tidy as this makes the images a little bit distracting.
This image is similar to the first one. I moved my hand up to cover a bit of my face to create different shapes. There aren’t as many lines in this image as the first one, but I really like the composition of this photograph. -Like the other two- it creates a clear divide between the bright colour eyes compared to the crisp white background. I really like the fact that my nails are also white as this makes the image tie together and it also makes the image look finished and gives a pattern to the photograph.
I cropped this image down so it was just a photograph of my eye. I also made my eye brighter because the focus is on my eye and it finishes the photograph off and enhances the colours around it. I used a mixture of eye shadow, crème eye shadows, glitters and face paints to create this look. I also added black liner to make the eyes a lot more defined. I also added silver foil to create different textures and layers.

For these set of photographs I made my makeup strong and colourful by using block colours to highlight my eyes and cheeks. I also used a strong colour for my lips. I added props to make the photographs more innovative and to give different textures and to emphasise the makeup. I really like the composition of this photograph because the model is looking away from the camera and there is extra space for the headpiece to fall into.
By using the flowers this makes the makeup on my eyes stand out and look bolder. The composition of this photograph is bold and creative. There's just the right amount of space to the side of the models head. The orange gloves add extra texture and compliment the flowers around my head.
This photograph is similar to the one above but this image is dramatic and has a bolder atmosphere, by having the models eyes open creates more power and light to the photograph. This makes the image balanced.

I cropped this photograph down so it is just of my eyes, as you can see my noise is in focus with all the glitter on it and the left eye is blurred and not in focus. My right eye however is in more focus and you can see my eye lashes more clearly. I really like the composition of this photograph because you don't know what’s going on in the rest of the picture all you’re focused on is the eyes and bitter on the nose.
This photograph is the same as the one above, but I have edited it differently. I have made the whole image brighter by adjusting the levels and curves. I have also made the eyes brighter and look more natural. I did the whole eye and not just the white areas like in the above photograph. Even though the left eye isn't in focus, I have made it look brighter and that has made it look more in focus than the image above.
